~ Book Award ~

I am very pleased to announce that my children's picture book, "A Polar Bear Night of Stars and Light," was awarded a Silver Medal in the "13th Annual Independent Publisher Book Awards." There were over 4000 books entered from around the world and 104 books entered in the "Children's Picture Books, All Ages" category. The awards were presented in New York City in May 2009.

Way up in the Arctic, two Polar Bear cubs and their mother lived a contented life. But one snowy day, while the cubs played, they somehow lost sight of their mother. Their search for her led them into the path of several other Arctic animals. Was it one of the Arctic creatures, or something else that helped them realize they weren't as lost as they thought?!

Letters from Readers

We just wanted to let you know that we just got our Alaska mail and received your book. It is absolutely magnificent!!! We remain very, very proud of what you have accomplished and extremely appreciative of the fact that you chose the polar bear. Thank you so much for reaching out and touching people so that they understand the importance of making a difference!

Lots of love,
Robert & Carolyn B.

Just re-read your book and wanted to drop you a line and first say "Congratulations" and secondly, thank you for your autographed copy. Thanks so much! I love the sketches and the colors you chose. It's all very dreamy! We look forward to having it as a new feature in the gift shop this season. I'm sure it will be a real hit! Congratulations and thanks again.

Cheers,

We were at McNally's on the weekend and saw your lovely book. The story is heartwarming and the illustrations just perfectly captured the warmth of the relationship among the bears within the cold of the arctic. Well done! I bought a signed copy for friends of ours who have a small (3 yr-old) granddaughter. They were delighted! Take care, and congratulations!

This new book is terrific. The illustrations are delightful. They are whimsical, magical and pure fantasy. Yet they are true to real nature. I love it. I have a niece and a nephew, both with families with small children. I would love to buy each family a copy for Christmas. Congratulations, I know it will be a big success.

Since my purchase for Jim's four families, I have had a chance to look over the book very carefully - I just can't say enough good things - I consider it "ageless" and an ideal gift for families from the very, very, young to the ancient - as old as me! I have suggested to my mother that a copy would be the ideal Christmas/Hanukah gift for her two grandchildren families who live in Seattle, WA. This may be the last year that my mother will  be able to give a gift  to her grand and great-grand children.

What a wonderful book and the illustrations and colors are terrific.  I'm going to order  books for our library in town and Kayleigh's elementary school library. If you ever do a book signing in NYC or Boston let us know and we'll be there!!!!

Tisa

August 2008

The young man holding the book is Tisa. He is Samburu, a tribe similar to the Maasai, and works at Samburu Lodge in Kenya, Africa. Tisa has become a good friend of mine, as I have been to that Lodge several times.

When my friend, Robert Taylor, was there in the summer, he gave Tisa an autographed book for his children. The next morning, Tisa brought a beaded bracelet with my name spelled in the beads for Robert to give to me. Tisa's wife was so pleased with the book, she had stayed up late that night to make it since Robert was leaving the next day!
